About Penny
My Background
I have been teaching the Alexander Technique since 1990 to people
of all ages and all walks of life including amoung many others:
solicitors, accountants, farmers, musicians, dancers, dentists,
housewives, horseriders, nurses, vicars, teachers, hairdressers...
I
was aware of the Technique from a very early age (in fact I crawled
around as a baby in the very room in which I subsequently trained
to be an A.T. teacter!). This was because both my parents trained
as Alexander teachers. My father trained with Mr Alexander himself
and taught for 48 years.
However,
despite my good examples, being a typical teenager, I did not begin
taking an active interest in the Technique until my late teens/early
twenties when I began to see the wider significance of the Technique
to my life. In particular, how much it could help with my self-confidence,
posture and in strengthening my back (I used to get dull aches from
time to time due to my somewhat collapsed posture).
From
1987-1990 I did the three year full time training at The Constructive
Teaching Centre, London run by Walter and Dilys Carrington. I then
set up a teaching practice in Chiswick, London and taught there
for seven years. In 1986 I moved away from the city life and currently
teach in an old mill house near Llandysul and in Carmarthen - South
West Wales.
The
Technique Applied to Pregnancy
Having worked with Ilana Machover (Alexander Teacher and Euotony*
teacher) during the pregnancy and homebirth of my daughter in 1994,
I later went on to do her Eutony training to assist other women
with applying the Alexander Technique in pregnancy and labour. I
therefore now teach pregnant women from three months to gestation.
I work one-to-one and would consider attending a woman's labour
if requested.
*Eutony is greek for 'good childbirth'.
The
Wider Picture
I am also interested
in all aspects that lead to health and believe it is important to
consider all of them to improve well-being including appropriate
nutrition and exercise, enough rest and sleep, having fun, effective
communication, meaningful work, being creative, social, emotional
and spiritual etc. I am also committed to minimising my impact on
this planet.
