Breathing
'The
Breathing Man'
When Alexander first began teaching his method back in the late
1800s he was known as 'The breathing man'. This was because after
much investigation he overcame his own breathing and vocal problems
and began to show others how he did it. Many people were helped,
including people with voice strain, shallow breathing and asthma.
Say no
to breathing exercises!
Alexander was very clear that breathing exercises were pointless
as we know how to breathe. We must learn how to stop interfering
with the natural processes. He did however teach a simple vocal
exercise that helped people use their voices without strain.
Today, many people who learn the Alexander Technique find that they
have batter, fuller breathing without their having done anything
specifically to their breathing.
