Improved Posture
The Technique has become known for helping people with posture. Yet, Alexander Teachers don't like the term posture. Why is that?
The term 'posture' has people immediately sitting up straight in a rigid, held kind of way.
Somewhere we all sense that our backs are meant to support us and a sense of guilt is often elicited when we connect to the fact that we don't naturally sit in a more poised way.
We know we can sit like this for a few minutes but we can't hold it for long.
So if good posture is not about 'sitting up straight', how do we improve our posture?
Naturally strong backs are fostered over time - not through so-called 'strengthening' back exercises but through a slow awakening and learning of what we are doing to prevent our backs from supporting us effortlessly.
The Technique slowly builds awareness of how you are interfering with the natural poise which is your birthright. This comes with the experience you get in your regular lessons and with your new daily intentions to build awareness and an intention to allow - rather than 'push' to get results of whatever kind.
As you learn the Technique, you will become more self-connected and thus will make more intelligent decisions about your everyday living.
This includes being aware of how you are sitting and standing; being aware of how you are doing specific activities (gardening, walking, running and daily tasks for example) as well as making daily decisions to move more, act when the fist niggle of an ache alerts you that something isn't right and take regular breaks from computer work.
Having a teacher support you until new, more life-serving habits are created is vital. Without this support, most people revert back to habitual life.
